Jesus’s Mother’s Song -“Faith In Action”
Luke 1:46-55 (NASB77)
We will be starting a Christmas series entitled, “The CD of Christmas Songs in the Bible from Luke.” There are five songs in the New Testament associated with the birth of Christ. (All in the N.T. Book of Luke the first two chapters) There is Elizabeth’s song Luke 2:29-45, Mary’s Song in Luke 1:46-55, Zechariah’s Song in Luke 1:67-69, The Angel’s Song, in Luke 2:13-14, and Simeon’s Song in Luke 2:28-35. We will play our CD each of the next four Sundays leading up to Christmas. This Lord’s Day we begin with Mary’s Song: we will title it: Faith In Action.
This is not the first poem-song: Elizabeth has just welcomed and honored her, saying, “blessed is she who believed.” Now she recognizes with awe that not only Elizabeth, but all generations will call her blessed. 49For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. 50AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.
We must not make her a goddess and kneel before her, but we do need to call her blessed. It was her glorious privilege to be the mother of the Son of God, to bring Him into the world. We should not play it down, but we should not play it up either. She was a wonderful person, and it was no accident that she was chosen by God. It was His definite decision, and God makes no mistakes. My beloved as the world knocks us down all Christians need to allow the message of Christmas to remind us God does not make mistakes.
Mary begins her song by recounting the amazing, underserved grace of God. Notice how she refers to God as ”my Savior” in verse 47. Only sinners need a Savior. Mary sees herself, not as the offspring of an immaculate conception, where she was born without a sin nature, but as a sinner like all the rest of us in need of rescue. Luke 1:47 (NASB77) 47And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. How can this love from God not bring a song into our hearts also?
Let the truth of Luke 1:50 (NASB77) 50AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM. That’s Mary’s poetic way of saying, ”God, you didn’t give me what I deserve. Instead, You showed me mercy, withholding what I have coming, just as You do for all who fear You.” That’s the undeserved grace of God. To say that grace is undeserved is almost redundant. Because grace, by its very nature, is always undeserved.
My beloved if you find yourself all caught up in this world’s values; if you’re fresh out of options this morning; if you feel that you’ve been dealt a crumby hand in life, then I have a message for you: Don’t fawn after actors and make fame or wealth your great goal. Don’t despair over which party wins the most seats in congress. Don’t lose sleep over how unfair your boss treats you. And don’t seethe over how wronged you have been in your life. God has a plan for you to.
Luke 1:34-38 (NASB77) 34And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God. 36And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.”
