Sanctity Of Human Life and Lord’s Supper
Genesis 1:27 (NASB77)
One of the biggest threads that runs through the Bible is the Sanctity of Human Life. Every one of us as humans are created in God’s very image. Every life is important to God from the womb to eternity.
Is man created in the image of God, or does humanity create God in our own image? Simply put, did God make man, or did man make God? That is the question of questions. And, if you answer that wrong, nothing else can be right.
We find a very simple and straightforward answer to the question who we are and Who’s we are in
Genesis 1:27 (NASB77) 27And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
To make human life like that of the animals and to put it on the same scale as animals is to cheapen it. That is the problem with human life in our day and time. It is cheap and not valued. We are told we are animals, so we act like it.
God in His wisdom reemphasizes the value of human life made in the image of God in the list of the Big Ten:
Exodus 20:13 (NASB77) 13You shall not murder.
The image of God—establishes what fundamentally distinguishes human beings from all other creation and grounds the inherent worth of every person regardless of circumstances.
We see that the crowning jewel in all creation was the account of God creating mankind in His very image as is recorded in the very first chapter of God’s record of creation, and now we come to the very last act of God in the flesh as He established the Lord’s Supper in the upper room just before His arrest.
God in Christ not only came to give me life, but to do so that I may have life more abundantly. The world may cheapen life, but my Lord not only tells me my life matters but has real value in His action of dying for me.
John 10:10 (NASB77) 10The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have life and might have it abundantly.
Let us read of His love and value for each human life as our Lord God gives us the memorial we are to do until His return.
Luke 22:19-20 (NASB77)19And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”
As we take up the bread and cup let us pray that we will not take the gift of life for granted.
